GUARANTEES
No two breeders will offer the same exact guarantee but what is important is that when you purchase a new puppy that the breeder provides you with a “written” guarantee.  Verbal guarantees or warranties are generally not enforceable and will come down to your word against the breeder’s word should something happen to the puppy.  If the breeder were sincere about guarantying a pup, then why would he or she not have it in writing to start with?

Besides the general health at the time of sale, you can expect good breeders to guarantee against genetic disorders that their breed is prone to produce providing testing can be done to ascertain the parents are free of these defects.  Please do not assume that because the parents are tested and found negative of certain heritable diseases, that this automatically means the pups are free as well…this is simply not the case!  Parents can be carriers but never show outward signs of the disease and when two carriers are bred together, the result will be that some of the pups will be afflicted and others are carriers. It is the breeders responsibility to never breed two known carriers together or repeat a breeding in which previously produced heritable defects.

Guarantees should be fair to both the purchaser and the breeder.  In other words, if something should happen to your pup, you can expect a replacement or reimbursement but not both!  Just the same, if your Lawn mower you purchased at Sears, 2 years ago, blows up, would you expect Sears to refund your money on top of giving you a new mower? The answer is NO!

Breeders that offer guarantees, offer them because they care about your interest and the pup they sold to you.  They believe the pup to be healthy at the time of sale and do not predict serious problems in the future.  Understanding that a dog’s health is a result of many influences including heritable traits, environmental factors and the owner’s responsiveness to proper preventative and regular care, means that a breeder can only guarantee so much. The worst thing that can happen to a breeder is for them to get a phone call saying that something is wrong with the pup they sold.  No breeder that I know of wants a pup to become ill or disease ridden, still at the same time, there are breeders out there that accept absolutely no responsibility to the health of any puppy they sell so it is your job to ask the breeder what “written” guarantees are offered.
